What is prejudice?
Prejudice (say pre-joo-dis) is a word that means judging someone or having an idea about them before you actually know anything about them.
It can also mean having an opinion about something without knowing anything about it.
It seems a bit silly to have an opinion on something or someone you know nothing about!
Unfortunately, we don't always see that we are being prejudiced.
We don't always see that we have strong ideas about certain people, their culture or their religion.
Unfortunately, we don't always see that we have been influenced by family, friends and the media to have ideas about something or someone that we have no personal experience of. As responsible journalists, it is important that you consciously and consistently work to remain objective, to be mindful of discrimination, prejudices and stereotypes .In class today: self-bias assessment, and quick write. Take the bias assessment (class handout / copy below) I do not need to see the bias assessment. The results are for your reflection. In a quick write of approximately 150 words, discuss any patterns you observe and how these would impact your ability to write objectively. (remember language conventions) Send along. 2006630 Important note: take your time to actually reflect on these. "Don't care" is too often a cop out for not thinking. ReplyDeleteWhat I have realized is that I really don't care about race. Also I don't have any negative to say about it because im open mind to ideas. Everyone had the right to to express how they felt. Also with countries I have no negative thoughts on russia because its not my business.with religion i'm a little iffy because people and elderly force it on you. I personally don't like religion for myself. But' I do believe I am only bias about that. The things I hate is sororities all of them because sometimes they can make you feel excluded and not wanted. Also, There's been a problem with hazing and dying. They're expensive and unnecessary. I do think I am a little bias when it comes to religion and groups that unnecessary. But I don't think I am a hater about something big on this list.

DeleteI mostly picked positive for everything because it's everything that's helping us in life today. some of the other things I didn't really put as positive because I don't really think about them things.
ReplyDeletemostly I picked undecided because I don't really know those groups personally, yes there could be bad people in those said groups but there are also good people. The media paints a bad picture of people in certain groups a lot of the time but you can't believe everything you read if you've never met a few of those people yourself. who am I to judge unless the group is inherently bad like the kkk?

ReplyDeleteOn one hand I'm a person who generally has a positive experience with most people, though from the assessment I can only come to this conclusion due to my lack of experiences with individuals. So for the most part I am undecided
i learned that bias is pervasive and impossible to get rid of, but when formed with a basis can be an efficient way to rally people to fight for their belief, good or bad.
ReplyDeletesupposedly there could be bad people in each group, but that doesn't mean they're all bad, I picked between being undecided, positive, negative, and not caring, because most of these subjects have different attributes and contents they stand for.
